The Monocle Travel Guide to Seoul

Looking for a travel and lifestyle photographer? In October 2017, I went around Seoul and photographed about 130 places in 20 days for British magazine Monocle’s Travel Guide to Seoul. There were a few places that I couldn’t photograph, due to scheduling conflicts, but 99 percent of the location photos in this guidebook is from my hard work and archive. Photos by @junmichaelpark | Hundreds of thousands of protesters gathered outside the South Korean National Assembly on Saturday to demand President Yoon’s impeachment. The ruling People Power Party, except for three lawmakers, did not participate in the vote, which resulted in the motion failing to meet quorum by a margin of five votes.

After initial disappointment and anger subsided, many protesters—primarily young women—remained defiant in the freezing cold, continuing to pressure the PPP lawmakers by waving colorful lightsticks and singing and dancing along to popular K-pop songs.

Photos by @junmichaelpark | Four nights ago, lawmakers in South Korea’s National Assembly managed to overturn President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law within just a few hours. This declaration marked the first time such a measure was imposed in 44 years; the last instance was in 1980, which led to the Gwangju Democratic Uprising and a brutal massacre by the military junta.

Thankfully, bloodshed was avoided this time. It was due to a combination of luck and the courage of ordinary citizens, who flooded the streets to block military vehicles and prevent more soldiers from entering the Assembly. They used their smartphones to document the unfolding events and bear witness to history.

While a sense of normalcy was temporarily restored, there is a palpable undercurrent of anxiety throughout Korean society regarding the country’s uncertain future and the potential for President Yoon to attempt to impose martial law again.

Today, the coalition of opposition lawmakers plans to vote on impeaching Yoon and removing him from office. To succeed, they will need to secure at least eight votes from Yoon’s People Power Party.

이번에 유혈사태를 피할 수 있었던 것은 시민들의 용기와 약간의 행운이 더해진 결과였습니. 늦은 밤, 수천 명의 시민들이 거리로 나와 군용차량의 통행을 방해하고, 더 많은 군인들이 국회로 진입하지 못하도록 막아섰습니다. 그들은 스마트폰을 들고 상황을 실시간으로 기록하면서 역사의 산 증인이 되었습니다.

덕분에 일시적으로나마 평범한 일상은 회복되었지만, 대한민국의 불확실한 미래와 윤 대통령이 또 다시 계엄령을 선포할 가능성에 대한 불안이 사회 전반에 감돌고 있습니다.

오늘 국회는 윤 대통령을 탄핵하고 직무를 정지시키는 표결을 진행합니다. 탄핵안이 통과되려면 집권여당인 국민의힘에서 최소 여덟 표를 확보해야 합니다.

이번 주말, 2021년부터 3년간 기록한 반달가슴곰 복원사업에 대한 사진작업 중 23점을 선보입니다.

📍 장소: HDC아이파크몰 용산점 더가든 4층

장소가 야외이고 붐비는 곳이라 매일 오후 1시부터 4시까지 있으려고 합니다. 금요일에는 작품 설치 때문에 아침 일찍부터 오후 늦게까지 있을 예정입니다.

작년 말, 카메라 트랩 영상을 올리면서 “내년엔 꼭 야생의 곰을 찍고 말겠어!” 하고 야심차게 다짐했었는데요. 과연, 수많은 고난을 뚫고 그 꿈을 이뤘을까요? 궁금하시다면 전시장에서 직접 확인해 보세요! ㅎㅎ

이번 작업은 미국 내셔널지오그래픽 재단(National Geographic Society)의 지원을 받았습니다.

Since the venue is outdoors and busy with foot traffic, I will be there from 1 pm to 4 pm every day. On Friday, I’ll be there from early morning for the installation of the frames until late afternoon.

At the end of last year, I shared a video about my camera-trapping journey and ambitiously vowed, “Next year, I will capture a wild bear on camera!” But did I manage to overcome all the challenges and achieve that dream? To find out, you’ll have to come see the exhibition! 😊

Photos by @junmichaelpark for @nytimes | This past Friday, I drove to Paju to photograph two beekeepers, Mr. Cho Seong-hoan and Mr. Park Jung-sun. The two men are among a handful of beekeepers who work inside the Civilian Control Zone (CCZ) near the DMZ, the heavily militarized strip of land that divides North and South Korea.

Oh, the honeybees! At Mr. Cho’s farm, I got to spend time with these incredible creatures, who, unlike people, can fly freely in and out of North Korea. I also had a chance to taste their honey. Made from the nectar of flowers growing in an area with exceptionally high biodiversity due to being mostly untouched by humans since the Korean War, this honey is particularly delicious.

It was a rare privilege to document Mr. Cho, Mr. Park, and their honeybees and get a glimpse into life in the CCZ. Many thanks to photo editor Maud Bodoukian Meyrant for having me on this story, which was published on the front page of today’s New York edition.

지난 금요일, 저는 뉴욕타임즈의 의뢰로 양봉을 하는 조성환 씨와 박정선 씨를 촬영하기 위해 파주로 향했습니다. 두 분은 남북한을 가르는 군사분계선 인근의 민간인통제구역(CCZ) 안에서 양봉을 하는 몇 안 되는 양봉가들입니다.

꿀벌은 사랑스럽고 귀여운 존재였는데요. 조 선생님의 벌 농장에서 북한을 자유롭게 드나들 수 있는 이 작은 생명체들과 함께 시간을 보냈습니다. 군사분계선 인근지역은 한국전쟁 이후 사람의 손길이 닿지 않아 생물 다양성이 매우 높은 것으로 알려져 있죠. 이 지역에서 자란 꽃에서 채집한 꿀은 특히 맛있었습니다.

In July, my wife and I summited Yushan, Taiwan’s highest mountain at 3952 meters (12966 feet). We started from the Tataka Trailhead, spent a night at Paiyun Lodge, and hiked early in the morning to catch the sunrise on the main peak. We were very lucky with the weather, and the view was breathtaking.

몇 주전, 아내와 저는 해발 3952미터로 대만에서 가장 높은 산인 위산(玉山, 옥산) 정상에 올랐습니다. 타타카 들머리에서 출발하여, 배운 산장에서 하룻밤을 보내고, 새벽 일찍 등반을 시작해 주봉에서 일출을 감상했습니다. 날씨가 매우 좋았고, 덕분에 아주 멋진 풍경을 볼 수 있었습니다.

벌써 열 번의 봄이 지났습니다. 세월호 참사 10주기를 맞아 지난 10년간 모진 세월을 견뎌내신 세월호 유가족 분들과 생존자 분들의 용기와 사랑을 기억합니다.

그리고 그동안 함께 걷고, 함께 비를 맞고, 함께 울고, 마음을 나누었던, 지금도 피해자와 유가족 분들을 기억하고 있는 많은 분들께 감사드립니다.

On the 10th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster, I think of the courage and love of the Sewol families and survivors who have endured innumerable difficult moments over the past decade.

I am deeply grateful to the many people who have walked with them, cried with them, shared their hearts with them, and still remember the disaster today.

Photos by @junmichaelpark | I photographed election campaigns and constituents in Seoul one day before South Korea’s general election for the Finnish newspaper @helsinginsanomat.

The first photo features an opposition supporter who carried green onions in a Dior bag during the final campaign by the Democratic Party on the eve of the election. The green onions symbolize protest against the recent price hikes of essential items. At the same time, the Dior shopping bag refers to a bribery scandal in which First Lady Kim Keon Hee received an expensive Dior handbag as a gift, seemingly without any ethical concerns.

In January, President Yoon Suk Yeol vetoed a bill for a special probe into allegations of stock price manipulation by Kim. Yoon further angered the public by making a comment that suggested he was unaware of the cost of green onions — a staple in Korean cuisine — while visiting a grocery store last month.

Based on the exit polls, it is projected that the opposition Democratic Party will win today’s election by a landslide. The Korean public has expressed their dissatisfaction with the current government led by Yoon and the People Power Party. The country’s political landscape is set to undergo yet another major change.

사진: 박준수 @junmichaelpark @seoulphotographer | 4.10 총선을 하루 앞 둔 어제, 핀란드 일간지 헬싱긴 사노마트의 의뢰로 서울 곳곳의 선거 유세와 유권자들을 촬영했습니다.

첫 번째 사진은 선거 전날 더불어민주당의 마지막 유세에서 대파를 디올 쇼핑백에 담아 온 야당 지지자의 모습입니다. 대파는 최근 가파르게 오른 물가를 상징하며 총선의 뜨거운 감자로 떠올랐습니다. 동시에 디올 쇼핑백은 영부인 김건희 씨가 고가의 디올 핸드백을 선물로 받는 모습이 고스란히 영상으로 담긴 스캔들을 의미합니다.

올해 1월 윤 대통령은 배우자 김 씨의 주가 조작 의혹에 대한 특검 법안에 거부권을 행사했고, 지난 달에는 마트를 방문한 자리에서 대파 가격을 제대로 모르는듯한 취지의 발언을 해 대중의 분노를 샀습니다.

출구조사에 따르면 오늘 선거에서 야당인 더불어민주당이 압승을 거둘 것으로 예상됩니다. 한국 국민들은 윤 대통령과 국민의힘이 이끄는 현 정부에 대한 불만을 표출했습니다. 이에 따라 대한민국의 정치 지형은 또 다른 변화를 맞이할 것으로 보입니다.

Muju in North Jeolla Province, where the park is located, is known for its snow precipitation and winter scenery. A cable car makes the peak a popular and accessible winter destination, but too much foot traffic has damaged the ecosystem nearby.

덕유산이 위치한 전라북도 무주는 많은 강설량과 수려한 겨울 풍경으로 유명합니다. 설천봉부터 향적봉에 이르는 구간은 접근성이 좋아 겨울철 인기 여행지로 꼽힙니다. 하지만 케이블카로 방문하는 여행객들이 너무 많아서 인근 생태계가 훼손되고 있습니다.
