How South Korea Prevented a Covid-19 Diaster for National Geographic

Photos by @junmichaelpark @seoulphotographer / In April, I worked with @natgeo to cover what South Korea has been doing right in handling Covid-19. I photographed medical workers at testing booths and Covid-19-only hospitals, a testing kit company, a school conducting an online class, a social distancing outdoor exam, and a taekwondo studio, a restaurant and a park once again bustling with people.⁣⁣

⁣⁣After nearly a month of hard work and 8500 photographs, nine images made the final cut. Using National Geographic’s wide-reaching platform, I wanted to document medical workers and other unsung heroes on the frontlines doing their best to keep everyone safe. This was to be a story of hope, but after a recent outbreak in Itaewon, many of the more positive photos were unfortunately taken out. It was rewarding to shape this story’s direction with the power of photography, but much still remains untold.⁣⁣

⁣⁣My sincere gratitude goes to the medical staff at the National Medical Center, the Seoul Medical Center, the Enpyeong District Public Health Office, and H+ Yangji Hospital; also the teachers and students at Younghoon International Middle School and Songjoong Taekwondo studio, as well as TCM Biosciences and the Bim Bom brunch café. A big thank you to my photo editor Samantha Clark for her guidance and trust. Last but not least, thank you M for all your support throughout this journey.⁣⁣
