In the summer of 2024, I took a scenic road trip with my wife to photograph and document the beauty of South Jeolla Province for the magazine GEO France. The 8-day trip gave us a rare opportunity to visit South Korea’s hidden gems and less-traveled locations.

Start Your Journey in Vibrant Mokpo
The perfect South Jeolla road trip often begins in Mokpo, a lively port city rich with history and culinary delights. Famous for its incredibly fresh seafood, Mokpo is a paradise for food lovers. Take a ride on the Mokpo Marine Cable Car for sweeping views of the coastline and nearby islands, offering a dramatic introduction to the region’s coastal beauty.

Discover the Traditional Salt Farms of Jeungdo Island
Jeungdo Island charms travelers with its traditional salt farms and unspoiled landscapes. Here, you can witness age-old salt harvesting techniques and stroll along vast, peaceful salt flats. The slow pace of life and scenic surroundings make it a perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Explore the Tranquil Ecosystems of Suncheon Bay
Heading east, Suncheon Bay is a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. This ecological wonderland features sprawling tidal flats and one of Korea’s most beautiful reed wetlands. The park is home to a diverse range of bird species, making it a hotspot for birdwatching and peaceful nature walks.

Experience Spiritual Renewal at Baekyangsa Temple
Located within the stunning Naejangsan National Park, Baekyangsa Temple, which is technically in North Jeolla Province, offers travelers a serene retreat. During a temple stay, you can explore Buddhist teachings, practice meditation, and find peace amidst lush forests and mountain views.
Cook with Jeong Kwan: Mindful Temple Cuisine
A true highlight of the journey is the chance to attend a cooking class with Jeong Kwan, the internationally recognized Buddhist nun and chef. Held at Baekyangsa, her classes focus on mindful cooking using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Her deeply spiritual approach to food offers a unique perspective on Korean temple cuisine.
(Keep in mind her cooking class is not really that you cook with her, but rather that she will cook for you.)
Savor Local Flavors and Rural Charm
Beyond its scenic beauty, South Jeolla is a treasure trove of culinary experiences. From bold fermented dishes like gat kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi) to the adventurous hongeo (fermented skate), the region’s food culture is as vibrant as its landscapes. Rural villages throughout the province provide authentic local experiences and warm hospitality.
Why South Jeolla Province Should Be on Your Travel List
A road trip through South Jeolla is more than just sightseeing—it’s a journey into Korea’s heart and soul. With its coastal beauty, ecological wonders, spiritual experiences, and unforgettable cuisine, the region offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re seeking adventure, serenity, or cultural depth, South Jeolla leaves a lasting impression.
